Biography of Author:
Ibn Qudamah was a great scholar of the Hanbali Madhhab, author of the illustrious encyclopaedia on jurisprudence, al-Mughni. He was born and died in the land which Allah and His Messenger described as being blessed, Palestine and Damascus respectively.
At the age of ten his family moved to Damascus where he memorised the Quran at an early age, studied its sciences and even studied an abridged version of al-Khiraqi (a famous treatise on Hanbali fiqh). He studied with some of the major scholars of his time and also met Abdul-Qadir al-Gilaani shortly before he passed away.
Ibn Qudamah passed away in the year 620 AH on the day of Eid al-Fitr, may Allah shower Him with Mercy abundantly.
Ibn an-Najjaar described him as: "The Imaam of Al-Hanabilah (Hanbalis) in the Mosque of Damascus, he was a trust worthy, noble figure, extremely generous, of a clean character, a cautious worshipper, follower of the Salaf in methodology, emitting light (of knowledge and piety) and respectful. One may benefit from his sighting before even hearing his speech!”
